Choosing a Security School

Security

There are a myriad of career options in the security field. Everything from criminal justice to information security to personal security is a possibility, and there are lots of educational institutions offering training in this sector. When selecting a school, look at the different programs and how they coincide with possible career paths. In fields such as criminal justice, programs offering everything from certificates to master's degrees are available, so find a school that offers a program at the desired degree level.

Another consideration is certification. Certain occupations require certification and/or licensure. Find out what is required from licensing boards as well as from potential employers. Someone interested in computer security, for example, should earn certification as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

Any school selected should be regionally accredited, which provides students assurance that it meets quality standards. Look at the experience of the instructors, length of program, curriculum, hands-on training, and career placement services. A personal visit is an excellent way for one to judge the merits of a particular school or program.
